  • Seed Collection

As part of CPC's IMLS funded initiative to determine seed storage longevity in wild rare plant species, “fresh” seed of Henderson’s horkelia (Horkelia hendersonii) was collected in the Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest. In Oregon, it is found only at four sites in Jackson County. Thousands of the plants grow in this high-elevation, open area of low grasses and forbs; apparently, population numbers have not much changed since the “original” seed collection was made over 30 years ago. When time came to collect seed, it took a while to visually determine which of the fruits contained mature seed, which are dark, mottled and shiny as if varnished. Upon processing of the seed, it became apparent that many mature-looking seeds had no contents, which complicated selection of sufficient good seed for the project.

  • Orthodox Seed Banking

In 2021, CPC contracted the Rae Selling Berry Seed Bank to recollect seed from a population currently held in long term orthodox seed storage as part of an IMLS-funded seed longevity experiment. The National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation will evaluate how germination tested viability and RNA Integrity of seed lots decline over time in storage.
