  • Seed Collection

In 2023 the Fairchild conservation team focused on seed bulking the Narrowleaf Carolina scalystem (Elytraria caroliniensis var. angustifolia). After collecting seeds from Nixon-Smiley Pineland Environmentally Endangered Lands Preserve in 2021, the team had a disappointingly low harvest, but sowed several seeds to test viability.  The resulting plants were very active seed producers, and thus, the team has made an ongoing effort to bag the developed inflorescences before the seeds were dispersed. Even so, the Narrowleaf Carolina scalystem has been an active volunteer plant in adjacent pots. To date a total of around 1900 seeds from 5 maternal lines have been collected with more to come, and seedlings are frequently “saved” when they come up in neighboring pots for use in future restoration projects.
