Description:

Very little information is known about this species, although it appears to be relatively stable despite the fact that fewer than 2,000 plants remain in the wild. (Dudek & Associates Inc. 1999)

Habitat:

Occurs on exposed knolls in either shaded yellow pine woodland, on seasonally moist, fine loamy soils, chaparral on moist, sandy clay soils, or native grassland. (Dudek & Associates Inc. 1999)

Based on an September 2020 extract of the California Plant Rescue Database, California Botanic Garden holds 7 accessions of Calochortus palmeri var. munzii in orthodox seed collection. There are as many as 32720 seeds of this species in their collection - although some may have been used for curation testing or sent to back up.

These collections together emcompass 805 maternal plants

Endemic to California, Calochortus palmeri var. munzii is known from only 30 occurrences in the San Jacinto Mountains in Riverside and San Diego?Counties. Potential threats include grazing, hydrologic alterations, non-native species, and recreational activities.
