The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Conservation Science team seeks an enthusiastic and qualified candidate to join us in support of the Native Plant Gene Bank. The successful candidate will play an essential role in helping target, monitor and collect native rare plant seeds for conservation storage as well as in their propagation, to determine their horticultural requirements. The Native Plant Gene Bank program (part of the Plant Conservation team) is integral to the conservation of San Diego County’s rarest plant species through seed banking, seed bulking, and reintroduction efforts. Field work includes hiking under various, potentially extreme conditions to remote locations in San Diego County to find and monitor wild rare plant populations, gather data, and make seed collections. Propagation research includes development or improvement of horticultural techniques of rare species for seed bulking and restoration efforts, potentially with species never cultivated before. Laboratory work includes processing seed materials for conservation storage, conducting and monitoring germination trials under controlled conditions and assisting with micropropagation of exceptional species. The successful candidate will have horticultural experience, ideally with growing San Diego native plants, will be willing and able to perform field work under various conditions, will have familiarity with GIS and data collection, and will be passionate about our native flora and its conservation.
