Real-time Online Dashboard Tracks Progress on the Hawai‘i Strategy for Plant Conservation for Laukahi
Hawai‘i is home to some of the most unique and diverse ecosystems on our planet, yet these ecosystems are among the most threatened of any in the world. The Hawai‘i Strategy for Plant Conservation, guided by the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, addresses the conservation of plants in Hawai‘i with a framework of 5 broad Objectives consisting of 20 outcome-oriented Targets. The strategy addresses plant conservation in a comprehensive and engaged manner and established Laukahi, a network of partners, to coordinate and measure the collective progress. To measure, visualize, and communicate the progress, the Laukahi Network created a real-time online dashboard. The dashboard displays progress as graphics and text for each Target using information from the Laukahi database. Conservation efforts of Laukahi network partners are represented and aggregated in a data management system using standardized progress tracking. As new data is entered into the database, the dashboard reflects the updates due to the workflow in the dashboard software, InetSoft. By using this workflow, real-time metrics are available for each of the 20 Targets. Laukahi has published the user-friendly dashboard on their website (https://laukahi.org/dashboard/) to easily communicate this information to a wide range of audiences. Users can navigate to each target to find a more in-depth narrative, figures and tables, and contributing network partners. By measuring progress, Laukahi has identified gaps in our knowledge and conservation activities of Hawaiian plants. Laukahi—translated as “single leaf” in the Hawaiian language—unites our work to advance plant conservation in Hawai‘i.
