Mahonia sonnei is known from only two small populations in a five hundred square meter area along the Truckee River in California. The small evergreen shrub was relocated in 1973 after having been ""lost"" for ninety years. Truckee's barberry is threatened by vandalism, horticultural collecting, and changing land uses. It was listed as Endangered by the Fish and Wildlife Service in 1979. Kartesz (1999) and the California Native Plant Society do not treat the plant as a distinct species but instead include it with their treatment of Mahonia repens.
