Location: Sandia Peak

Date/s: 9/4/2024 and 9/6/2024

Field Collections: Collection of Heuchera pulchella was conducted on 4 and 6 September 2024. Collections on 4 September 2024 targeted one population. Very large populations of the plant were found to be in bloom with many having set seed. Flowers at this point were nearly dried out and collections are assumed to have taken place at the peak seed set. Collections targeted 20% of seed set from every second plant encountered, but were quickly adjusted to 20% of seed set for larger individuals on site. Observers ceased counting plants after 500 had been counted, as the populations are very large. The species was observed on inaccessible cliffs in very large numbers and seed collected represents far less than 1% of total seed set. A subsequent collection was conducted on 6 September 2024 targeting a second population. Conditions were similar to those observed in the first population, and collections were halted when the limits of the permit were reached.

Seed Storage Information: The National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation (NLGRP) will be the primary storage facility for both collection dates, and the ABQ BioParkwill serve as the backup facility. From the collection on 9/4/2024, 23837 seeds were processed from 42 maternal lines. From this collection event, 11781 seeds from 38 maternal lines will be put in backup storage. From the collection on 9/6/2024, 6253 seeds were processed from 12 maternal lines. From this collection event, 2484 seeds from 12 maternal lines will be put in backup storage.
