Description:

Herbaceous perennial, arising from an often much-branched, woody root crown; leaves oblong in outline. Flowers May and June.

Habitat:

Aletes macdougalii ssp. breviradiatus typically grows in crevices in sandstone slab and canyon walls and rarely in sandy soil at 5,800-8,200 feet (1770-2500 m) elevation. It appears to favor areas where there is favorable seasonal moisture.

Distribution:

Aletes macdougalii ssp. breviradiatus is endemic to the Animas and San Juan River valleys in San Juan County, New Mexico, San Juan County, Utah, and Montezuma County, Colorado, USA.

Aletes macdougalii ssp. breviradiatus is restricted to relatively small regions in southeast Utah, southwest Colorado, and northwest NM. Although there are several occurrences recorded in the last ten years most records are from prior to 1950. It appears to be scattered and never locally common.

21-80 occurrences. A healthy extant population of approximately 50 individual Aletes macdougalii ssp. breviradiatus plants growing within less than one hectare is located within Mesa Verde National Park (Marilyn Collier, Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado, personal communication, December, 1999).
