Pinewoods fingergrass (Eustachys petraea) is widespread in the Southeastern US, and also found in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and northern South America. It is one of the most common native grasses in pine rocklands of Miami, and is quick to colonize disturbed areas. It has potential to be a restoration powerhouse in this globally imperiled ecosystem. In 2009, botanists from Fairchild collected and stored around 100 seeds of this species from Larry & Penny Thompson Memorial Park and EEL Preserve. Because the collection was sizeable and more than a decade old, Fairchild was invited to participate with CPC and NLGRP in a seed ageing study. Additionally, Fairchild was able to provide around 1500 freshly collected seeds. These seeds were collected ex-situ from wild plants rescued at the Gold Coast Railroad Museum, also part of the Richmond pine rocklands, close to the original 2009 collection site.
