Has anyone had to modify (substantially) conditions in your garden to support growth of a rare plant species?

Please share your examples.

At The Arboretum at Flagstaff our garden soil was volcanic, but we had many rare species that required limestone soil.  We created a limestone mound along a planned garden path to support several rare limestone species in the region.
