Exploding elaisome!

Stylophorum diphyllum (wood-poppy; family: Papaveraceae) is an endangered species at-risk in Canada. This seed isĀ under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) showing the elaisome – a fleshy structure ants take away in the seed dispersal process. Looking at seed phenology is part of common garden experiment of my PhD project looking at phenotype differences amongst the genetically-distinct wood-poppy populations in Canada.
For scale seeds are approx. ~1 mm wide and 2.5 mm long.
