Santa Cruz cypress, Hesperocyparis abramsiana var. abramsiana. This tree has only a few populations
in the Santa Cruz Mountains. They have serotinous cones, which require wildfire to open the cones and
disperse their seeds. This photo shows the open cones after a major fire in 2020. A seedling germinated
under these cones the following spring!
