Plant Records Specialist
Cornell Botanic Gardens
Cornell Botanic Gardens (Cornell University) is seeking an accomplished Plant Records Specialist. This position is a key pillar of the Garden’s curatorial, horticultural, and plant collections management operations and serves all programmatic areas of the organization with taxonomic and technical expertise. The Plant Records Specialist will think holistically and strategically about the living collections development, as well as perform assigned functions, anticipate opportunities for collaboration and coordination, and act at all times as an ambassador for the Garden. This position curates, maintains, and improves Cornell Botanic Gardens’ computerized plant records and mapping systems using IrisBG, ArcGIS, and associated software programs.
Other expectation include: independently perform curatorial field work such as collections inventories, evaluation of plant condition, verification of identity and nomenclature, tracking plant movement, and maintaining display labels and accession tags. Upload and enter data into system and generate customized reports and maps. Advise and instruct users in techniques to obtain information and, where appropriate, to contribute to data entry. Compile and organize information into customized reports that serve a wide variety of audiences and purposes including research, supporting Cornell courses, Development and donor relations, conservation projects such as our collaboration with the Global Conservation Consortium for Oaks, and publications.
Cornell Botanic Gardens includes more than 3,600 acres of University land in three major areas: the Botanic Gardens, Arboretum, and Natural Areas. The botanic gardens’ mission is to inspire people—through cultivation, conservation, and education—to understand, appreciate, and nurture plants and the cultures they sustain. Advancing this mission helps us realize our vision: a world in which the interdependence of biological and cultural diversity is respected, sustained, and celebrated.
Cornell Botanic Gardens embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.
