Description:

Data for the Refugio Manzanita is outdated but from what we do know, Arctostaphylos refugioensis is an Imperiled species found in Santa Barbara County. A. refugioensis was named after where it can be found – Refugio State Beach and Refugio Pass in the Santa Ynez Mountains (north of the city of Santa Barbara, CA). This species prefers coastal sage/chaparral environments with sandstone soils where its known to grow up to 4m tall. In the winter months, December through March, clusters of white, bell-shaped blossoms occur. As mentioned, there is currently no valid data about how many natural occurrences are left but there are previously known threats to A. refugioensis that are still believed to persist today including development and road maintenance.
